Scheduling Serendipity

Let me introduce you all to Ruth Carter, a costume designer known for designing costumes for movies such as Do the Right Thing, Malcom X and Black Panther. Ruth is a visual storyteller who inspired me with how she created stories through fashion. It reminded me of how the world is our canvas and we all have stories of value (that we often undervalue) to share.

Her story subtly reminded me of the importance of allowing for serendipity. Ruth was in her late 50s before designing for Black Panther which elevated her visual art and name to a new level. Ruth was consistent regardless of the notoriety or attention she received for decades before she became well known.

I look at my calendar during busy weeks and question whether I truly allow for serendipity. How can I when I have meeting after meeting instead of allowing for space to do nothing, space to create, space to be consistent? I wonder if you feel the same when you reflect on your week?

Could it be that you are scheduling yourself out of being alive, alert and awake to new opportunities?

In a world that often glorifies constant hustle, it’s easy to overlook the value of stillness and the quiet creativity it fosters. Ruth’s journey reminds us that serendipity favours those who allow space for it—those who are consistent and intentional, regardless of recognition.

This week, I encourage you to try carving out even a small pocket of time with no agenda. Allow yourself a moment to reflect, to explore, or simply to be. Who knows what inspiration, idea, or opportunity may find you in those moments?

Thank you for joining me on this journey to live and work with more awareness and openness. Until next time, stay curious, and make room for the unexpected.
